Writer’s Workshop: I wanted to clarify your child’s writing.  I was able to explain our workshop time to some parents, but not all.  Your child has Writer’s Workshop one to three times per week.  This is where I am able to meet with children and talk about their writing.  However, they are able to write everyday at Daily 5 writing station.  You may be seeing a lot of writing paper coming home that doesn’t look like a finished product.  This is probably writing that they have done at Daily 5 station.  I do not generally go over these papers with the children unless they choose to edit and publish one of the pieces.  This is writing that they are free to pick and take home daily. J
Word Work:  The children have words that they work on daily according to their Spelling Inventory. (I shared this at conferences.)  Right now most of the groups do not have words for their sort.  Their sort consists of a picture that they are to say and then find the correct initial sound category to match.  In the future as the words get harder and we begin to take tests on the sorts, I will probably send a copy of the sort home with your child.  They will be able to cut it out and sort it at home with you for a week or two before their spelling test.
Native American Day: Next week Wednesday morning we will be celebrating Native American Day.  You are more than welcome to come in and help for all or part of the morning.  Please let me know if this is something you would like to do.  The children will be rotating to each first grade class to work on an activity.  Our classroom will be making a weaved placemat for our feast.  The feast will be in the afternoon.  We will be having cornbread muffins and popcorn while we enjoy Charlie Brown’s Mayflower Voyage.  J

STUDENT OF THE WEEK: Our special student this week is Emily Luna!  Emily likes to read and learn on her I pad.  She also enjoys Math time.  She likes to go to Wal-Mart, McDonald’s, and the park.  Her favorite food is an apple.  Emily likes Scooby Doo, Dora the Explorer, and SpongeBob Square pants.  J

Thanks!  Please let me know if a different day/time will work better for you.
Last week your child got to visit the class store!  They are using the play money that they earn here in class to buy items from our store.  These items are theirs to keep.  Please send back any baggies with play money that your child may accidentally take home.  They are kept in their mailbox and a couple of children have brought theirs home by accident with their mail.  Thanks!
