Important Dates:

October 31^st: Afternoon Halloween party.  (Our morning will be full of specials.  We will have Music and P.E. in the morning that day so the fun will begin after lunch recess!  If you wish to have your child dress up please send the costume in a bad.  They may change after lunch recess.  NO WEAPONS PLEASE.)

November 3^rd: NO SCHOOL- Professional Development

November 6^th: NO SCHOOL- Parent/Teacher Conferences

November 27^th & 28^th: NO SCHOOL- Thanksgiving Break

Class T-shirts: Last Friday I sent home a note about class T-shirts.  These are $6.00 a piece and I would like to order them by at least next week.  Please let me know if you didn’t get a slip.  It was pink. 

Class Store:  We have been using DOJO points to earn rewards in the classroom thus far.  However, I would like to have the children begin earning pretend coins.  I have done this for many years and it really helps the children understand coin values and equal trades.  So, probably after next week (because of NO SCHOOL two days) we will switch from earning DOJO points to earning money.  The children will keep the money that they earn here at school.  When we have a parent volunteer they will be able to visit our class store and buy items to keep.  They will have an opportunity to trade for larger coins before they have the option to buy. 

In order to run the class store we will need class store items like pencils, erasers, individually wrapped candy (Dum Dum suckers, lifesavers, bubble gum), and any dollar store items.  We have also had donations of gently used toys in the past.  This was a big hit.  J

Student of the Week: Our special student this week is Jeffrey Scott Jr.   Jeffrey would like to be a teacher when he grows up! J  His favorite animals are frogs and birds.  He loves pizza and playing Legos and army men.  His favorite sports are baseball and soccer and he enjoys collecting rocks and looking at birds! They are beautiful creatures! J

Reading:

This week our class will be focusing again on the important skills covered during the last five weeks. Here are some activities you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we’ll be reviewing and extending.

• Think of an activity or an event you have shared together.
• Write a few simple sentences together about the activity or event. Have your child add some drawings to help describe the activity.
• Ask your child to present the description to family members.

Before your child presents the description, discuss this checklist.

√    Look over your sentences. Do they clearly tell what happened?

√    Speak clearly and slowly.

√    Remember to smile. 

Showing interest in your child’s reading, writing, and speaking will help his or her progress during the year.

Clase T-shirts: El viernes pasado me enviaron a casa una nota sobre la clase camisetas. Estos son de $ 6.00 por pieza y me gustaría pedir ellos por lo menos la próxima semana. Por favor, hágamelo saber si usted no recibió una hoja. Era de color rosa.

Clase de la tienda: Hemos estado utilizando puntos dojo para ganar premios en el salón de clases hasta el momento. Sin embargo, me gustaría que los niños comienzan a ganar monedas fingir. He hecho esto por muchos años y lo que realmente ayuda a los niños a comprender valores de la moneda y la igualdad de los oficios. Así que, probablemente después de la próxima semana (porque de NO ESCUELA dos días) vamos a pasar de ganar puntos dojo para ganar dinero. Los niños van a quedarse con el dinero que ganan aquí en la escuela. Cuando tenemos un padre voluntario que será capaz de visitar nuestra tienda de la clase y comprar artículos para mantener. Ellos tendrán la oportunidad de intercambiar por monedas de mayor tamaño antes de que tengan la opción de compra.

Student of the Week: Our special student this week is Madelyn Carpenter! Madelyn is not too partial to favorites.  She loves all cats, all colors, and she wants to be many things when she grows up! Her favorite food is mac and cheese and her favorite sport to play is soccer!  Congratulations Madelyn! Your future looks bright! J

Reading:

This week our class will be focusing on the different ways we can move our bodies, such as running, kicking, waving, and hopping.

Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we’ll be practicing.

Word Workout

• Words to Know Have your child show and tell the meaning of the words, and then write a sentence using each word.
• Spelling/Phonics: beginning consonant blends Help your child identify the two beginning sounds that blend together in each spelling word. This week’s phonic sounds are beginning r- and s-blends, as in the words stop, grin, and drip. Help your child think of other words that begin with the same sounds.

Comprehension: key details

Have your child circle the sentence that tells a key detail about a picture. Then help your child identify more details in the picture.

Math: Our Unit 2 Math Test will be this Thursday and the pretest for Unit 3 will be on Friday.  Look for Unit 3’s Family Letter in your child’s mail soon.  The letter has all of the answers to Unit 3’s home links.  I know a couple of them have been a little tricky so this would be a good letter to clip to your fridge! J

Writing: The children will be organizing how to play a sport.  Yesterday we brainstormed ideas of different sports that they play or have heard of.  Then we reread a previously read story and talked about the sequence of events using words like first, next, then, and last.  We then chose a sport and charted the sequence of events to playing that particular sport.  Today they will have opportunity to put their words on to draft paper and eventually a final copy by Friday that will have an illustration to match.  The writing process is a lot of work! J

Student of the Week: Our special student this week is Jonathon Sikkema.  Jonathon loves bull riding!  He wants to be a bull rider when he grows up.  His favorite animal is a rhino.  He likes the color red and football.  And his favorite food is corn!  Jonathon loves animals, tractors, and showing chickens at the Youth Show.

Reading: Great job reading at night!  Try to make sure your child reads their book every night, but do not worry if something comes up!  I just tell them to keep their book in the folder for the next night.  Family should always come first.

Math: So far in Unit 2 we have been working on ways to make 10.  We have also learned how to add and subtract using a Ten Frame.  There are so many ways to find the right answer!  We are even blessed with 10 fingers to use for adding and subtracting.  A skill that we are just learning is finding the bigger number and counting on.  Example: 5+3=.  The 5 is bigger so we would say five and count on 3 more times to find 8!  We will be taking the Unit 2 Math test sometime in the middle of next week.

Writing: Last week we worked on using descriptive words to add to our sentences.  This week we are organizing our thoughts.  We are following the 6 traits of writing.  Today they used a T chart to organize their thoughts about playing with friends when it’s raining and when it’s not raining.  They did very well!  Tomorrow they will work on putting these thoughts into a story.

Estudiante de la semana: Nuestro alumno especial esta semana es Jonathon Sikkema. Jonathon ama monta de toros! Él quiere ser un jinete del toro cuando crezca. Su animal favorito es un rinoceronte. A él le gusta el color rojo y el fútbol. Y su comida favorita es el maíz! Jonathon ama a los animales, tractores y mostrando pollos en el Salón de la Juventud.

Lectura: lectura de Gran trabajo por la noche! Trate de asegurarse de que su niño lee su libro cada noche, pero no te preocupes si surge algo! Yo sólo les digo a mantener su libro en la carpeta para la noche siguiente. La familia siempre debe ser lo primero.

Matemáticas: Hasta el momento en la Unidad 2, hemos estado trabajando en maneras de hacer 10. También hemos aprendido a sumar y restar usando un Marco Diez. Hay tantas maneras de encontrar la respuesta correcta! Incluso hemos sido bendecidos con 10 dedos a utilizar para sumar y restar. Una habilidad que apenas estamos aprendiendo es encontrar el número más grande y contando. Ejemplo: 5 + 3 =. El 5 es más grande por lo que diríamos cinco y contar con 3 veces más para encontrar 8! Vamos a tomar la prueba de la unidad 2 de Matemáticas algún momento a mediados de la próxima semana.

Escritura: La semana pasada trabajó en el uso de palabras descriptivas para añadir a nuestras oraciones. Esta semana estamos organizando nuestros pensamientos. Estamos siguiendo las 6 características de la escritura. Hoy se utilizó un diagrama T para organizar sus pensamientos acerca de jugar con amigos cuando llueve y cuando no llueve. Lo hicieron muy bien! Mañana se trabajará en poner esos pensamientos en una hist
