A Peek in the
Week
Important Dates:
November 25th: Native
American Day- more information to come
November 27th & 28th: NO
SCHOOL- Thanksgiving Break
*I’m leaving the class
store note on for a couple of more weeks before we begin.
Class Store: We have been using DOJO points to earn
rewards in the classroom thus far.
However, I would like to have the children begin earning pretend coins. I have done this for many years and it really
helps the children understand coin values and equal trades. So, probably after next week (because of NO
SCHOOL two days) we will switch from earning DOJO points to earning money. The children will keep the money that they
earn here at school. When we have a
parent volunteer they will be able to visit our class store and buy items to
keep. They will have an opportunity to
trade for larger coins before they have the option to buy.
In order to run the class store
we will need class store items like pencils, erasers, individually wrapped
candy (Dum Dum suckers, lifesavers, bubble gum), and any dollar store
items. We have also had donations of
gently used toys in the past. This was a
big hit. J
Student of the Week: Our special student this
week is Bruce Kirt. Bruce is a fun
little guy that loves, cats, apples, T-ball and the color red! He has one brother and one sister and he
would like us to know that he is a good brother. I believe that! When he grows up he would
like to be a Mail Carrier.
Congratulations on being Student of the Week Bruce! J
Reading:
This week our class will be focusing on the
different kinds of jobs that need to be done in a community. Your child will
discuss how community workers help the people who live in their community.
Here are some activities that you can do with
your child to help reinforce the skills we’ll be practicing.
Word Workout
- Words to
Know Help
your child draw a picture and use the words to tell how a community helper
has helped you and your child.
- Spelling/Phonics:
short e Help your child practice the
spelling words, then have your child add words to the list with the same
vowel sound as inhen. This week’s phonic sound is the short e sound,
as in men and bread.
Comprehension: character,
setting, events
Play a game with your child in which you make
up characters, identify settings, and create stories and events about them.
Math: On
to Unit 3! Remember you can always ask
me if you have any questions about any of the Home Links. Especially in first grade, our curriculum is
based around offering them many different ways to solve problems and understand
number concepts. The hope is that then
they use whichever strategy works best for them to solve number stories. J
