Dear Families,

We have a secret celebration planned for your child.  With your help, we would like to plan a special surprise on Friday, May 30th .  This is a secret.  Please do not tell your child about it!

We would like you to tell all of your friends and relatives that we are planning a special “Surprise Day” in our classroom.  Please ask them to send a letter or card to your child at school.  We will be collecting this mail and putting it in our surprise box.  On May 30, we will open the box and find out what the surprise is inside.  (It will be all that mail!)

Imagine how surprised and excited your child will be to discover all that mail sent to just them.  Please ask all of your friends and relatives to write to your child and to PRINT the message to your child so that he/she will be able to read the cards independently.

Please address the mail as follows:

Your child’s name
Mrs. Kamphouse’s First Grade
McBain Elementary School

107 East Maple Street

McBain, MI  49657

Start sending mail now and keep it coming in until May 30.  Thank you so much for helping with this surprise!!  (remember, don’t tell!)

Sincerely,

Mrs. Kamphouse

Student of the Week:  Our special student this week is Casey Veltema.  Casey enjoys Math time at school, especially on his ipad.  He also enjoys going to Great Wolf Lodge and the YMCA.  Casey playing in the water, hide and seek and video games.  When he is older he would like to ride snowmobile.  His very favorite food is cherries, yum!  And his favorite song is Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash.  J

Reading/Science: This week we started our non-fiction book club posters.  They are looking great! What talented artists we have in our classroom!
The end-of-the-year reading goal is 48 words in one minute and 90% accuracy!  This is huge for first grade, but practicing everyday will GREATLY improve your child’s reading abilities, which makes everything is SO much easier! J

Word Study: This week’s focus sound has been “ai”  and “ay.” They two vowel teams sound the same.  They both say a like in rain and ray.

Math:  We just took the Unit 6 Math test today. I wanted to squeeze in another review day yesterday since we had a snow day on our original test day.  The last few Math units get progressively more difficult.  Please be sure to continue to do the Math homelinks with your child.  It REALLY shows that this helps. J

**Please continue to read with your child as often as possible and do the math home-links.  Thank you so much for your support! J
